The reported prevalence of coronary heart disease in adult surveys has risen four-fold in 40 years and even in rural areas the prevalence has doubled over the past 30 years. Modern medicine, so far, does not have definite cures, and those offered by it have many side effects. Hence, herbal products need to be evaluated scientifically with an aim to define the role of these agents in alleviating cardiovascular disease. Plants used for the treatment of cardiovascular disease include Terminalia arjuna, Vitis vinifera, Lagenaria siceraria, Pichrorrihiza curroo, Centella asiatica, Ginko biloba, Cucumis trigonus, Punica granatum, Crocus sativus, Sida cordifolia etc. Polyherbal formulations give synergistic effect if given in proper dose and quantity. The present review focused mainly on use of individual plant, mechanism of action and polyherbal formulations for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
